Single Adult

You are a single adult with a world full of possibilities open to you! You might still be in your late teens, soon to complete college or you might have completed your education and started working. You might be feeling such a jumble of emotions right now- excitement and happiness about being independent, fear about the unknown future and the new responsibilities you have to take on or loneliness because you are on your own and not in a relationship. All these feelings are part of the transition from adolescence to adulthood are are a natural part of becoming a mature individual in charge of your own life.

The most important tasks you need to achieve in this stage for your wellbeing are:
  • Achieving your own identity, separate from that of your family
  • Choosing an occupation to engage in
  • Becoming independent, emotionally and financially
  • Choosing a life partner

An individual who has been able to achieve a stable, independent identity is able to become healthy personal and professional choices which promote his/her well-being. An individual who is unable to do so often makes life choices either acceding to the family wishes or rebelling against them. Being able to choose an occupation which gives you satisfaction also depends on what basis your choice has been made-on the basis of your own interests and abilities or on the basis of what your family or wellwishers say. Similarly, the ability to choose a partner and enter a healthy committed relationship depends on your level of emotional maturity and separation from the family's emotional process.
